The fact of the matter is that Little Beach will always be Dr. Leisure's personal choice as the number one clothing optional beach in the world. You just cannot beat the ambiance of Little Beach. Nice sand. Human scale. Year round weather. The reasons are numerous. Ultimately it is the people from around the world that come here to pay omage to the demigod Maui who captured the sun. Maui forced the sun to pass overhead slower so that humankind could enjoy the benefits. Hawaiian legend has it that Maui was born on Little Beach.

Under the jurisdiction of the Dade Country Recreation Department this has to be the number one clothing optional beach on the mainland (Hawaiian way of referring to continental states.) Ease of access (parking lot across the street), proximity to accommodations, presence of lifeguards all contribute to making this the number one clothing optional beach in the USA.

Named for a hulking, wrecked vessel that once sat on the sand, Wreck Beach is the shore of choice for Vancouver students. Just several hundred steps below the University of British Columbia, the three-mile-long beach is a wildlife and nesting area for both bald eagles and bald bodies. Although the barely-there, dental-floss bikini debuted here, nude beaches in Brazil are somewhat rare. However, naturism has caught on in some parts of the country, including Praia do Pinho (a.k.a. Pinho Beach), located in the southern state of Santa Catarina. Pinho opened in 1987 as the first sanctioned au naturel beach, and nudists who frequent this area make a point of saying "clothing is not an option" despite the strand's official description as clothing-optional. Balneário Camboriú, the chic city home to Pinho Beach, is very popular with beachgoers from Argentina, Uruguay and elsewhere, and its population is said to increase ten-fold from December through February. With its cobalt blue waters, sun-bleached cottages, ancient ruins and red sandstone cliffs, Crete's Red Beach is picturesque to say the least. Made famous in 1968 when hippies from across Europe flocked to its shores, the resort at Red Beach has remained a naturist favorite for its rustic charm and its tolerance (nudity is allowed everywhere except the dining room). Just north of Miami lies one of the few county-run and government-sanctioned clothing-optional beaches in the United States. For years Haulover Beach, part of the city of Sunny Isles, has been a haven for naturists from South Florida as well as snowbirds from Canada and Europe. A nude beach in Santa Cruz seems fitting, given the area's tolerant, bohemian lifestyle. Just six miles north of the city, the private Red, White and Blue Beach has been the choice of Bay area naturists for more than 30 years. And, because the area is privately owned, visitors are welcome to cook, play and even park their cars in the buff. Officially known as Maui's "unofficial clothing-optional beach," Little Beach is an isolated strand surrounded by high shrubs, craggy volcanic rocks and driftwood. Although nude sunbathing is illegal in Hawaii, the law has not been enforced here for years. As a result, Little Beach has become a favorite hangout for naturists as well as artists like Dr. Leisure, who has been painting colorful scenes from nude beaches for more than a decade. Almost a mile of beach north of the northernmost parking lot is sanctioned as a clothing-optional beach. Patrollers arrest gawkers.
Haulover Beach: Florida's largest modern clothing-optional beach Dade County's Haulover Beach County Park is the only clothes-optional beach in Florida with government-erected signs which alert visitors to the nude beaches boundaries. This unique situation occurs in only a handful of other places in the United States. These include: Rooster Rock State Park, Oregon; Sandy Hook National Seashore, New Jersey, and Hippy Hollow on Lake Travis near Austin, Texas. Along the 1/2 mile of Florida sand you will see a thousand or more weekend visitors getting their all-over tans, comfortably playing volleyball in the nude, and frolicking in the surf. These beach goers defy classification as to gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, or physical ability. They are truly a cross-section of not just America but of nationalities from all the continents. The Beach is in Sunny Isles Florida, just north of Bal Harbour and southeast of Aventura. It is maintained by the County, and parking is $4.00 Haulover Beach is one of the largest expressions of social nudism since clothing was invented. Beyond the enjoyable experience of water or sunlight running over one's nude body, gymnosophy, the philosophy of nudism, and the clothing-optional portion of Haulover Beach, are a cultural shift, with connections to other movements for greater openness in society.

Palm Beach County Florida's Largest Nude Beach Prior to 1982. MacArthur Beach State Park was once the site for Florida's largest nude beach. The place was popularly known as "Air Force Beach" and existed as a beacon of nude beach freedom for about 2000-3000 beach-goers each weekend. This ended abruptly in 1982.

Apollo Beach

Nude sunbathing and swimming remains legal at Apollo Beach within the traditional naturist area. The "traditional naturist area" at Apollo Beach is south of the last crossover (#5). The National Park Service (NPS) has posted (small) signs to indicate where they think naturist recreation is traditional. In our opinion the NPS-signed area is woefully inadequate in terms of access, unfair to naturist families and older people, and not very manageable (as we've explained to the NPS, who still complain at us because ignoring our advice doesn't work well). Nevertheless getting signage is a milestone of official recognition, however grudging and inadequate. Therefore we encourage naturist visitors to respect the NPS signage and proceed to the far northern area to enjoy natural beach recreation at what (we think) is the finest seashore park in the country - Canaveral National (From Central Fl Nudists) |
Hobe Sound
967 acres on both Jupiter Island and the mainland
There is no 'governmentally sanctioned' or 'officially designated' nude beach at Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. Still, with proper precaution, eagle eyes, and good binoculars, the island's isolation may lend itself to naturist use starting one half mile north of the beach parking lot or one mile north of the Pecks Lake crossover. If someone approaches while your are sunning, briefly cover-up until they have passed. Depending on where you station yourself, encountering others may seldom occur.
Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge (HSNWR) occupies 967 acres on both Jupiter Island and the mainland. On the island, the refuge controls approximately 3.5 miles of beach front and is bounded on the north by the St. Lucie Inlet State Reserve. When combined, HSNWR and the St. Lucie Inlet State Reserve form a roadless, six-mile long, pristine reservation for the entire northern end of Jupiter Island. Wildlife abounds on the barrier island. HSNWR occupies one of the most productive sea turtle nesting sites on the entire Atlantic coastline. On the mainland, the refuge controls a long tract which is sandwiched between the intracoastal waterway and Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Each year the park averages 120,000 visitors, 70 percent of whom frequent the beach portion of the park.

Blind Creek Beach
Hutchinson Island - St Lucie County
It must be noted that there are no 'government sanctioned' or 'government designated' nude or clothes-optional beaches on Hutchinson Island. Still, the tradition of nudity at local isolated beaches has existed here for over five decades and is considered part of the informal indigenous folklore.
Hutchinson Island is a 22 mile long barrier island which forms the Atlantic shoreline of both St. Lucie and Martin Counties. Locals on the mainland in nearby Ft. Pierce typically refer to the island as either 'South Beach' or 'South Hutchinson Island'. These terms distinguish it from North Hutchinson Island which is situated immediately north of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. The string of living coral reefs between Key West and Ft. Pierce lies less than a mile offshore.

St. Lucie Inlet

The Law. Although there is no 'governmentally sanctioned' or 'officially designated' nude beach at SLISR, the island's isolation lends itself ideally to naturist use starting one half mile to the south of where the boardwalk meets the beach. If someone walks by while you are sunning, it is considerate behavior to briefly cover-up until they have passed. In the course of an entire day at this isolated isle, encountering others may never occur.
St. Lucie Inlet State Reserve (SLISR) comprises both the northern 928 upland acres of Jupiter Island and a living coral reef situated 1/2 mile offshore. When combined with the neighboring Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge to the south, the publicly-owned land protects the northern six miles of this 17-mile long barrier island, and forms a roadless, natural beach-scape free of development.

Clothing Optional? For the past 40 years, Playalinda Beach has been a popular spot for nude sunbathers, both local and tourists. Bathers at this popular destination in Brevard County are still at battle with Brevard's anti-nudity ordinance that was enacted in 1995. Beach goers argue that the Canaveral National Shoreline is a federal property and the County Sheriff has no right to enforce a local ordinance there. Both locals and tourists still flock to the beach. Even with an occasional arrest, nude bathers continue to have a presence on the beach, posting watches in an effort to warn bathers in the event that law enforcement is approaching.
