The Business Development Board (BDB) in conjunction with Palm Beach County and Governor Jeb Bushs Office reached an agreement with The Scripps Research Institute (Scripps) to open its second major research facility in Palm Beach County.
In connection with this, the BDB entered into purchase contracts for the 2,000-acre parcel owned by Mecca Farms and an adjacent 2,000-acre parcel controlled by Charles Vavrus.
Subsequently, in January 2004, the BDB assigned the Mecca Farms contract to Palm Beach County and Vavrus contract to EDRI.
The Mecca Farms tract will be used to develop the research facilities for Scripps. It is the intention of EDRI to develop the adjacent Vavrus tract into a mixed-use, self-contained project that would compliment and enhance the Scripps project and help build a sustainable technology corridor.
