Cultural Council Calls for
Artist-in-Residency Proposals


The Palm Beach County Cultural Council is currently seeking proposals for its Artist-in-Residency Fund/Category A grant program. The grant provides funding for artist-in-residency programs that emphasize interaction between artists and the Palm Beach County community. The program’s mission is to forge partnerships between artists and host nonprofit cultural organizations that benefit residents of Palm Beach County.

The grant application and guidelines are available online at, www.palmbeachculture.com/GrantsA. The grant is open to creative writing, dance, media arts, multidisciplinary, music, theater, or visual arts projects. The application deadline is August 6, 2007.

The Artist-in-Residency program awards a maximum of $30,000 for up to two projects and is funded through Palm Beach County’s portion of Florida’s State of the Arts license plate sales.

The residency is open to an individual or team of artists working with a host nonprofit cultural organization based in Palm Beach County. The artist’s proposal must include hands-on activities for participants and culminate in an original work.

The most recent Artist-in-Residency grants were awarded to:

Step Afrika!, dance troupe working with host organization Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center.
Project Title: Step Up to College
Award: $10,000
Step Afrika! conducted workshops for after school step clubs serving approximately 260 elementary, middle and high school students. In the workshops students learned the history, development and choreography of stepping. The step teams will then prepared to perform for thousands at the 2007 Afro-Arts Festival at the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center on the campus of Palm Beach Community College in Belle Glade.


Ms. Mari Omori, visual artist working with the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.
Project Title: The Culture of Tea: Shared Experiences, Individual Expressions
Award: $20,000
Ms. Omori used the serving of tea to teach artistic expression and appreciation of shared cultural values and perceptions among several diverse local organizations and various age groups. Consistent with the Morikami's mission of bridging east and west culture, the resulting artworks (including language arts, fiber arts and film) and final exhibit displaying them reflected relationships to the community, others and nature.





Artist-in-Residency grants are awarded through a panel review process. Applicant proposals will be scored on professionalism; the artistic merit of the proposed residency project; the project’s feasibility; the projected impact on the community; and the strength of the collaboration with the host organization.

Grant recipients will be announced late September.

There will be a free application assistance workshop on Friday July 6 at 3:00 p.m. in the Tourist Development Council board room.
