FLORIDA BAR BOARD OF GOVERNORS ELECTIONS COMPLETED

May 25, 2005

TALLAHASSEE -- The 2005-2007 Florida Bar Board of Governors special election has been completed with Eugene K. Pettis elected to fill the 17th Judicial Circuit, Seat 3 vacancy. The vacancy on the Board of Governors was due to the death of 17th Circuit board member Henry Latimer, who was finishing a two-year term, and would have been sworn in for a new two-year term during the June 2005 Annual Meeting. Pettis will finish out the term left by Latimer and be sworn in for a new two-year term beginning June 24, 2005.

The Bar's 52-member board consists of the president and president-elect, the president and president-elect of the Young Lawyers Division, representatives elected by members of the Bar from each of the state's 20 judicial circuits, four out-of-state representatives elected by Florida Bar members who reside outside of Florida, and two public members appointed by the Florida Supreme Court.

The Board of Governors has exclusive authority to formulate and adopt matters of policy concerning the activities of the Bar, subject to limitations imposed by The Rules Regulating The Florida Bar. The full Board of Governors meets bi-monthly.

VERO BEACH ATTORNEY NEXT IN LINE FOR PRESIDENT OF THE FLORIDA BAR YOUNG LAWYERS DIVISION

April 8, 2005

TALLAHASSEE -- By a unanimous vote, John M. Stewart was elected by the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division (YLD) Board of Governors president-elect designate for 2005-2006 at their January meeting in Ft. Myers. Stewart will serve under incoming YLD President Jamie Billotte Moses and will become president himself in June 2006. Stewart has served on the YLD Board of Governors for six years, beginning in 1999 and represents the 19th Circuit. The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division includes every lawyer under-36 or with under five years of practice.

Stewart, as chair of the YLD Governmental Affairs Committee, has been at the lead for issues affecting young lawyers, and lawyers statewide, by organizing the annual legislative/governmental symposium. The conference focuses on the current topic mostly likely to effect the legal profession. Some past symposiums have highlighted such weighty topics as Revision 7, judicial independence, and the balance between effective law enforcement and civil liberties, and have featured some of Florida’s most influential members of the legal community.

Stewart, in addition to the symposium, seeks to further the knowledge of YLD members by increasing the visibility of the YLD in the state capital among the legislative and executive branches, “in hopes of further educating our constituents on important issues facing young lawyers in the state of Florida.” This year the governmental affairs committee has suggested holding a “Young Lawyers Day in Tallahassee” with the goal of building relationships among young lawyers and members of legislative and executive leadership.

Stewart, a third-generation attorney from Vero Beach, graduated from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center and began practicing with his father at their firm Stewart & Evans in Vero Beach. He practices commercial litigation and mediation and focuses on real estate and construction related litigation and disputes.
