THE FLORIDA BAR REMEMBERS HENRY LATIMER

January 27, 2005

TALLAHASSEE -- Florida Bar Board of Governors member Henry Latimer, a respected lawyer and esteemed jurist, will be remembered by his fellow Bar leaders as a man of great compassion and integrity.

Meeting in Key West this week, the Bar’s Board of Governors will discuss the best way to honor the legacy of their colleague and friend, according to Bar President Kelly Overstreet Johnson.

“Henry was an inspiration to all lawyers. He was a model of what we as lawyers aspire to be: a consummate professional, an outstanding trial lawyer, a mentor to young lawyers and a dedicated community leader. He will be sorely missed,” said Johnson.

Latimer had served on The Florida Bar Board of Governors since 1999, and he was recently elected to serve another two-year term through June 2007 representing the 17th Judicial Circuit. His board committee service included Communications, Program Evaluation and Strategic Planning Committees, and he was Board liaison to the International Law Section and a member of the Judicial Independence Committee.

Additionally, he was vice chair of the Bar’s Commission on Lawyer Regulation currently conducting a study of the process of disciplining lawyers. Last year, he was vice chair of The Florida Bar Citizens Forum, a special advisory group representing various non-lawyer constituencies in Florida. He chaired The Florida Bar’s Committee on Equal Opportunities in the Profession and frequently served as a speaker at programs promoting diversity in the legal profession.

His dedication to Bar service was expected to lead him to the organization’s top elected seat.

“I recently had a discussion with him about the Bar presidency and I anticipated he would be running this fall and would become the first African American president in the history of the organization,” Johnson said.

SEVEN NEWLY ELECTED TO FLORIDA BAR BOARD OF GOVERNORS

March 23, 2005

TALLAHASSEE -- Seven Florida Bar members have been newly elected to The Florida Bar Board of Governors in contested races; one incumbent was re-elected.

Newly elected are:

Second Circuit, Seat 2: Dominic M. Caparello, Tallahassee.
Fourth Circuit, Seat 2: John J. Schickel, Jacksonville.
Eighth Circuit, Seat 1: Carl B. Schwait, Gainesville.
Thirteenth Circuit, Seat 2: William Kalish, Tampa
Fifteenth Circuit, Seat 2: Gregory W. Coleman, West Palm Beach.
Fifteenth Circuit, Seat 4: Lisa S. Small, Palm Beach.
Sixteenth Circuit, Seat 1:Edwin A. Scales, Key West.

One incumbent was re-elected: Harold G. Melville, Ft. Pierce, Nineteenth Circuit, Seat 1.

One more vacancy on the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar exists due to the death of Seventeenth Circuit board member Henry Latimer. Latimer was finishing out a two-year term on the board in Seat 3, and would have been sworn in for a new two-year term during the June 2005 Annual Meeting. A special election is currently being held; results will be announced after April 21. Running for this seat are: Allison K. Bethel, Keith Grumer, Eugene K. Pettis and Bradley Winston.

In December, two Florida Bar members were newly elected to The Florida Bar Board of Governors and 14 incumbents were re-elected without opposition. The Bar's 52-member board consists of the president and president-elect, the president and president-elect of the Young Lawyers Division, representatives elected by members of the Bar from each of the state's 20 judicial circuits, four out-of-state representatives elected by Florida Bar members who reside outside of Florida, and two public members appointed by the Florida Supreme Court.

The Board of Governors has exclusive authority to formulate and adopt matters of policy concerning the activities of the Bar, subject to limitations imposed by The Rules Regulating The Florida Bar.
