TALLAHASSEE, Jan. 26, 2005 -- The Florida Bar's Young Lawyers Division Board of Governors (YLD) has donated $1,500.00 to the American Red Cross International Fund in order to assist with tsunami relief efforts in Asia. The YLD donated the funds in response to the violent earthquake, which caused the formation of a tsunami in the Indian Ocean. The tsunami caused horrific destruction, resulting in the loss of over 170,000 lives.
The donation to the American Red Cross continues the YLD's out reach to victims of natural disasters. The YLD previously assisted with hurricane relief efforts in the State of Florida in response to the three hurricanes of 2004 with monetary donations and free legal services.
The YLD continues to assist hurricane victims and has voted to award a $1,000 grant to The Florida Bar Out of State Practitioners Division's hurricane relief efforts. In an effort to assist the Charlotte County School District, the Division organized a book drive in conjunction with various local bar associations and legal organizations throughout the United States. Approximately fifteen bar associations, legal organizations and law firms in Maine, South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, and Ohio collected books for the students of Charlotte County.
The Division has collected over 8,000 books that will be donated to the Charlotte County School District. Charlotte County was hit particularly hard by the 2004 hurricanes and the Book Drive will help the School District rebuild its school libraries. The $1,000 grant, in conjunction with donations from law firms, will offset the cost of shipping these books from out-of-state to the Charlotte County School District.
The Out of State Practitioners Division membership is comprised of attorneys from outside the state of Florida who are members of The Florida Bar.
The Young Lawyers Division assists The Florida Bar in its purposes, seeks to stimulate and encourage the interest and participation of YLD members in the programs of The Florida Bar, seeks to provide a full and complete program of activities and projects designed to be of interest and assistance to YLD members, and seeks to engage in activities furthering the best interests of the legal profession. The YLD members serves as a medium for fostering discussion and free interchange of ideas relative to the duties, responsibilities and problems of YLD members. Lawyers under the age of 36 or who are in their first 5 years of practice are members of the YLD.
