TALLAHASSEE, June 29, 2004 -- The Florida Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism and the The Florida Bar Standing Committee on Professionalism awarded the 2004 William M. Hoeveler Judicial Award to Barbara Pariente, Justice of the Florida Supreme Court on Thursday, June 24, 2004. The award, recognizing Justice Pariente's outstanding contributions to the judicial system, was presented at The Florida Bar Annual Meeting.
Justice Pariente has served as Florida Supreme Court Justice since December 10, 1997, and is the second woman to serve on the Court. Justice Pariente began her legal career at the law firm of Cone, Wagner and Nugent in 1975 and became partner in 1977. She later formed the law firm of Pariente and Silber and remained in private practice until September 1993 when she was appointed to the Fourth District Court of Appeal.
Justice Pariente has been a leader in the development of concepts of restorative justice, has chaired the Supreme Courts Steering Committee on Children in the Courts and is a faculty member for the Supreme Courts Justice Teaching Institute. In addition to these activities, Justice Pariente speaks throughout the state on professionalism, unified family court issues, juvenile justice issues and crime prevention.
Named for U.S. District Court Judge Wm. M. Hoeveler, Miami, the purpose of the Wm. M. Hoeveler Judicial Award is to recognize a judge who best exemplifies strength of character, service and competence as a jurist, lawyer, and public servant. Nominees for this award are judges who have communicated their pledge to the ideals of justice and diligence in inspiring others to the mission of professionalism.
Each fall, The Florida Bar Center for Professionalism solicits and coordinates the award nominees for The Supreme Courts Commission on Professionalism and The Florida Bars Standing Committee on Professionalism. Their mission statement embodies what we believe to be the character of the recipient of this award: to promote the fundamental ideals and values of the justice system and the legal profession and to instill those ideals in the persons serving and seeking to serve in the system.

THE GEORGE EDGECOMB BAR ASSOCIATION RECEIVES 2004 PROFESSIONALISM AWARD
|
TALLAHASSEE, June 29, 2004 -- The Florida Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism and The Florida Bar Standing Committee on Professionalism presented the George Edgecomb Bar Association (GEBA) the 2004 Professionalism Award for their program entitled Sligh Middle School Project. The award was given during The Florida Bars Annual Meeting last Thursday, June 24, 2004.
The "Sligh Middle School Project" provides a year-long mentor relationship between attorneys and students, encourages academic achievement, assists with career planning, and promotes the importance of professionalism to impressionable pre-teenagers.
Sligh Middle School is a public school located in urban Tampa with a largely African-American student population. GEBA partners with the faculty at Sligh beginning each year with a reception to induct the Role Model Students into the program and to introduce them to the community and the GEBA members.
The George Edgecomb Bar Association members and judges make presentations to the students throughout the school year concerning ethical practices, moral character, peer pressure and professionalism. There has been tremendous positive feedback from the Role Model Students, parents, Sligh Middle School faculty and the Tampa community.
The Professionalism Award is intended to encourage those bar associations, judicial organizations, or law schools with projects aimed at encouraging professionalism among attorneys. The criteria for evaluation include:
Overall quality of the program
