Why did Jyllands-Posten publish the cartoons? The Copenhagen Post explains:
Jyllands-Posten called for and printed the cartoons by various Danish illustrators, after reports that artists were refusing to illustrate works about Islam, out of fear of fundamendalist retribution. The newspaper said it printed the cartoons as a test of whether Muslim fundamentalists had begun affecting the freedom of expression in Denmark.
At The Palm Beach Times we believe respect for all religions appropriate but lack of respect for life, freedom of speech and a civilized society must not be given into. Perhaps making fun of religious icons is inappropriate, we at the Times would not have published the cartoons normally out of respect. That changed when the out of proportion violence occurred. We now believe that the cartoons must be published, it has become the lessor of the two evils. Muslim fundamentalists must not affect the freedom of expression in the world. Equally so Christian fundamentalism or Jewish Zionism must not affect the freedom of any citizen of the world.
