One of the most popular and highly recognized stand-up comedians on the road today, D.L Hughley has also made quite an impression in the arenas of feature film and primetime television. He spent four successful years as the star, co-creator, and executive producer of his own sitcom THE HUGHLEYS, which currently airs in syndication across the country.
The hilarious family comedy, based on his real-life experiences, features D.L. as Darryl Hughley, a man with a fresh point of view. Darryl moves his family from the city to the suburbs, from a small apartment to a big beautiful house, and the comedy unfolds as he struggles to try and fit into his new environment.
With a show that solidified him as a household name, D.L. shows no signs of slowing down. He can currently be seen in the blockbuster SCARY MOVIE 3 and just completed filming the MGM urban comedy SOUL PLANE which is scheduled for release in Spring 2004. He also co-starred last April in the FOX 2000 romantic comedy CHASING PAPI. In addition, D.L. is the top headliner on the LATHAM ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS COMEDY TOUR, a major venue comedy tour produced by Walter Latham of the Kings of Comedy fame.
D.L. has proven himself to be one of the hardest working men in showbiz. His new comedy DVD release, D.L. HUGHLEY LIVE is sure to become a collectors must-have, much like the Spike Lee directed THE ORIGINAL KINGS OF COMEDY concert film which launched D.L. into comedic super stardom.
The Original Kings of Comedy, based on the 1999 tour featuring D.L., Bernie Mac, Steve Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer, garnered close to $40 million at the box office and became one of the highest-selling DVDs in 2001. The film was based on the CROWN ROYAL KINGS OF COMEDY TOUR, the highest grossing comedy tour ever. In 1999 D.L., Bernie, Steve and Cedric embarked on the Kings of Comedy tour, which sold out major concert arenas in over 50 cities across the country and went on to gross a staggering $37 million dollars nationwide.
Spike Lee, eager to expose the tour to a larger audience, decided to make a docu-film of the tour, and it was released nationwide to rave reviews. In 2001, D.L. received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Spoken Comedy Album for The Original Kings of Comedy.
Also in 2001, D.L. starred in the feature film THE BROTHERS, alongside Bill Bellamy, Shemar Moore and Morris Chestnut. The film followed four black professionals facing the imminent marriage of a longtime friend and reformed playboy. The film earned a nomination for Outstanding Motion Picture at the 2002 NAACP Image Awards.
Although he keeps busy with television and film, D.L. remains a huge draw in the stand-up comedy arena. He continues to perform on the road nationally and
internationally on an almost weekly basis. In 1999, HBO aired D.L.s One-Hour Comedy Special, D.L HUGHLEY: GOING HOME which earned him a nomination for an NAACP Image Award.
With his innate ability to make people laugh, D.L. Hughley began his career as a comedian working in small clubs, citing his appearance on HBOs Def Comedy Jam as one of his earliest breaks in the business. As a result of his work on HBO and his quick rise in popularity among the audiences he constantly kept in stitches, D.L. was chosen as the first host of ComicView on BET.
The comedy industry quickly took notice of Hughleys talent and he was offered his first HBO special which garnered rave reviews. HBO quickly offered D.L. a second special, which went on to nab a nomination for a Cable ACE Award.
Hughleys success continued from there. With his quick wit and affable personality, he has now become a favorite guest on such shows as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan OBrien, and Live with Regis and Kelly, among others.
Hughley speculates on why audiences seem to respond to him so easily: I think theres a lot of material in my act that is positive and real. I just want to be great at making people laugh - everybody wants to be great at something. From the moment I picked up a microphone, I knew that this is what I was supposed to do! D.L. resides in the Southern California area with his wife LaDonna and their three children.
